I hired Attorney Fontaine for a PI claim, fresh out of 20 years of complex litigation spanning state and federal courts. Fontaine treated me as though I neither understood the legal process nor had the right to question him. He was condescending and dismissive rather than treating me as an informed client entitled to make decisions about my own case. Fontaine’s written valuation of my claim was so low that I retained different counsel. Under new counsel, the insurer’s first counteroffer was already higher than Fontaine’s proposed opening demand, and my case ultimately settled for ten times his written valuation and twice his proposed opening demand. Even after fees, my net was still higher than his opening demand. Attorneys can reasonably disagree about case value. My objection is his dismissive treatment of me for questioning an assessment that ultimately proved to be one-tenth of the final settlement.
