Email or SMS Alerts: Choose a Backup, Not a Deadline System
Claim Raven has separate email and SMS settings, so an account may be able to enable one channel, the other, or both. But a visible toggle does not mean every event is produced, that the same access or usage rule applies to every route, or that either provider will deliver a message. Choose the channel you can protect and monitor, then keep VA.gov, complete VA notices, and an independent calendar as the real status and deadline system.
Overview
Two channels are still only backups Enabling both email and SMS can create two possible delivery paths for an active event. It does not create an event producer, confirm VA activity, guarantee that either message arrives, or change a date in a notice.
What email and SMS have in common
The specific event must have an active Claim Raven producer before either channel can be attempted. The relevant channel and event preference must be enabled for the current account and route. The provider must be configured and available when the attempt occurs. An account, test action, or producer can apply an access or usage limit that is not proven by the toggle alone. A provider request can be accepted, sent, failed, filtered, delayed, or delivered without proving that you opened or acted on it. Neither channel replaces VA.gov, a complete VA notice, or an independent reminder.
Differences to consider
SMS requires a supported U.S. number, the current verification flow, consent, an available SMS provider, and a destination that the sender and carrier can reach. Email requires the account email, an enabled setting, an available email provider, and a mailbox that is not rejecting or filtering the message. A phone lock screen may expose an SMS preview to anyone holding the device. A shared inbox, forwarding rule, work account, or email preview can expose an email to other people. Current narrow templates are not identical. A text or email can include product context, a filename, submission GUID, claim ID, deadline title, or date depending on the producer. Some feature-specific producers use their own notification choice rather than the general event toggles. For example, a BVA analysis completion message can name the analyzed condition or research topic. Changing a phone number can require verification again. Changing an email or losing mailbox access can make email unsuitable even when the preference remains enabled. Opting out by SMS affects the sender's ability to text that number; it does not necessarily change the email preference. Channel controls remain separate.
Choose and test without depending on the result
Start with privacy Use only a phone and inbox you control. Review lock-screen previews, shared-device access, mailbox forwarding, account recovery, and who can see notifications. Review the current account and action Check the channel controls and any access, usage, verification, or provider message shown for the exact action. Do not rely on an older plan comparison. Confirm the event exists A listed preference can appear before a producer is active. General claim-status events are not produced under the checked contract, and appeal-related preferences are disabled when live appeal sync is unavailable. Test each available channel separately If the product offers a test, verify email and SMS independently. A result applies only to that test at that time and does not prove future event delivery. Keep official and independent backups Check VA.gov and complete notices directly. Put consequential dates on a separate calendar that does not depend on a Claim Raven message. Do not choose a channel from a fixed plan list Account offerings and route-specific checks can change, and current settings paths do not all enforce access or usage limits identically. Use the current product message for the exact action, and treat a visible setting as a preference rather than an entitlement or delivery promise.
If one channel works and the other does not
If one channel works and the other does not Email arrives, but SMS does not. Confirm the U.S. number, verification, SMS enablement, consent, and provider availability. Check blocked senders, carrier filtering, signal, storage, and device focus modes. Confirm that the event producer attempts SMS and not only email. Use email only as a backup if it is independently available, and continue checking VA.gov and notices directly. SMS arrives, but email does not. Confirm the account email and email enablement. Check spam, quarantine, mailbox rules, storage, forwarding, and provider availability. Confirm that the event producer attempts email and not only SMS. Use SMS only as a backup if it is independently available, and do not use a quiet inbox as evidence that nothing changed. Both channels are enabled, but neither arrives. Check whether the specific event has an active producer. Review the current account, provider, access, usage, and contact-verification messages. Open VA.gov and the newest notice immediately. Treat the event as unavailable in Claim Raven until confirmed; enabling two channels cannot fix a missing producer. For a Claim Raven settings problem, share the page name, approximate time, affected channel, and non-sensitive error text. Do not include the phone number, email address, message body, password, code, VA identifier, notice, medical record, or unredacted screenshot.
