You may receive additional VA disability compensation for eligible dependents when your combined disability rating is 30% or higher. Eligible dependents can include a spouse, certain unmarried children, and a financially dependent parent. A marriage or birth does not automatically update every VA benefit record, so check the dependents included in your compensation award.

Who can qualify as a dependent?
VA's guidance identifies these categories:

Not every person you support financially is a VA dependent. The dependent category and evidence matter. If your combined rating is 10% or 20%, the ordinary disability-compensation rate does not increase for dependents.
Which form should I use?
VA provides an online route for many spouse and child requests. Follow the current official page rather than an old screenshot of an account menu. If filing on paper, the form depends on the request.

Use the current form instructions and mailing address from VA. Do not assume the spouse-and-child form by itself covers a dependent parent's financial information or a school-attendance request.
What should I gather before applying?
Prepare the information requested for your particular relationship, including dates and places of relevant events and supporting documents where VA requires them. Prior marriages, adoption, school attendance, and a dependent parent's finances can involve additional details.
Use this private checklist:
- Your combined rating and the dependents currently listed on the award.
- The relationship or change you need VA to recognize.
- The event date, such as marriage, birth, adoption, school attendance, divorce, or death.
- The required form and supporting information for that category.
- The date you submitted the request and the confirmation.
- Any VA follow-up request and its deadline.
- The resulting decision and whether the dependent and effective date are correct.
Keep identifying and family information in a secure location. Do not post completed forms in public forums while asking for help.
How much does adding a dependent increase the payment?
The amount depends on the combined rating and household category. Use the current rate table rather than adding a flat amount for every dependent.
For a fictional 70% example using the 2026 rates effective December 1, 2025:
- Veteran alone: $1,808.45 per month.
- Veteran with a spouse and one child, no dependent parents: $2,074.45 per month.
- One additional child under 18: add $76.00.
- Veteran with a spouse and two children under 18, no dependent parents: $2,150.45 per month.
The difference between the first and last categories is $342.00 per month. This example assumes all listed dependents qualify and does not include special monthly compensation or other adjustments. Check VA's official 2026 rates for your exact category.
Can I receive back pay for a dependent?
Possibly, but the event date alone does not guarantee the effective date. VA's guidance explains circumstances in which it may pay back to a marriage, birth, or adoption when the rating and timely filing and response requirements are met.
If more than a year has passed, do not assume the full earlier period will be paid. Submit accurate dates, keep proof of the request, and read the resulting decision. An accredited representative can help if you disagree with the effective date or are unsure which rule applies.
What if a dependent's status changes?
Tell VA promptly about a divorce, death, school change, or other event that may affect entitlement. Continuing to receive an amount you are no longer entitled to can create an overpayment.
A child's 18th birthday is especially worth planning for. School attendance may permit continued dependency compensation when the requirements are met, but VA needs the relevant information. Do not assume a school record in another VA program automatically updates disability compensation.
Are dependency pay, CHAMPVA, and DIC the same benefit?
No. Additional compensation for a dependent is part of the veteran's disability payment. CHAMPVA is a separate healthcare program with its own eligibility rules. Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, or DIC, is a survivor benefit; it is not simply continuation of the veteran's monthly disability payment after death.
Use the official page for the benefit you actually need. Adding a spouse for disability compensation does not establish eligibility for every other family benefit.
