Purpose of Corporate Flashes

M21-4 section appendix-e.1. Official source text with a separately reviewed Claim Raven explanation when available.

Claim Raven wrote the explanation that follows. The original VA text appears below it, unchanged.

What this means

m21-4:appendix-e.1 explains purpose of corporate flashes. In plain terms, the official guidance says example: The Homeless corporate flash should be applied when the veteran or claimant is homeless, and removed when the scenario changes. It also addresses use the table below to identify any veteran or claimant-specific corporate flashes.

How this may help with a claim

Use m21-4:appendix-e.1 as a lookup tool for purpose of corporate flashes. Match the exact label, code, condition, or table row in your records to the official entry; one useful point is: Example: The Homeless corporate flash should be applied when the veteran or claimant is homeless, and removed when the scenario changes. Use the table below to identify any veteran or claimant-specific corporate flashes. Keep the notice or screen that uses the term so you can distinguish an internal status label from a filing deadline or entitlement rule.

What to review in your file

  • Check the file against this official condition: Corporate flashes are veteran or claimant -specific indicators that represent an attribute, fact, or status that may occasionally change.
  • Confirm that the record or notice addresses this source point: inputting the flashes when required, and
  • Document how this stated step or exception applies: removing the flash when it no longer applies or is erroneously applied.

Important limits

m21-4:appendix-e.1 helps decode purpose of corporate flashes, but a code, tracked item, or table entry is not proof that VA has granted or denied the underlying benefit. Use the governing notice and controlling law for rights and deadlines. The official context includes: Example: The Homeless corporate flash should be applied when the veteran or claimant is homeless, and removed when the scenario changes. Use the table below to reference historical corporate flashes, and the date that use was discontinued.

E.1.a. Purpose of Corporate Flashes

Corporate flashes are claimant -specific indicators that represent an attribute, fact, or status that may occasionally change. A corporate flash can either be automatically generated by the system, or managed manually by a user. Available corporate flashes not generated by the system must be identified and updated when applicable. Flashes will exist on a claimant's record until the flash is manually removed. Regional Offices (ROs) are responsible for

  • identifying claimants' records that require flashes
  • inputting the flashes when required, and
  • removing the flash when it no longer applies or is erroneously applied.

Example: The Homeless corporate flash should be applied when the claimant is homeless, and removed when the scenario changes.
