Claim Raven explanation

What this means

Disability compensation is a monthly VA benefit for qualifying disability connected to military service. This section describes the basic compensation framework and distinguishes it from other kinds of benefits.

Entitlement involves more than receiving a diagnosis. The relevant service, discharge, line-of-duty, and disability requirements must be considered with the more detailed statutes and regulations.

How this helps your claim

This helps you understand what VA means by compensation in a decision. It also helps separate the question of basic entitlement from the later questions of rating percentage and payment amount.

What to check in your records

Use your decision, examination reports, and relevant records to check the following points.

  • Identify whether the decision concerns disability compensation or another benefit.
  • Locate the service and discharge information relevant to the claim.
  • Find the evidence and findings about the disability's relationship to service.

Understand what the award actually recognizes

A compensation decision usually addresses several separate matters: whether a disability is connected to service, how disabling it is, and when the award begins. A disagreement with the percentage is different from a disagreement with a denial of service connection. The same document can contain both types of decisions.

Read the outcome for each condition rather than treating the letter as one overall approval or denial. Keep the diagnosis, service-connection finding, percentage and effective date together. This makes it easier to understand which part of the compensation framework a cited regulation is addressing.

Is compensation the same benefit as VA pension?

No. They have different purposes and eligibility requirements. A document about pension should not be read as though every compensation rule applies to it. Confirm the benefit named in the notice before using a reference page to understand an income, service or disability requirement.
